KILLER REVIEWS MOVIE AWARD WINNERS FOR 2009
Featuring the best horror films of 2009

Killerreviews.com launched the first annual awards ballot in October 2009 wherein we received countless responses through our message board, fellow horror sites and personal emails voting on such categories as Best Horror Film and Best DVD Release. When the votes were processed by our accountants at Price Waterhouse Coopers, there were some surprises and some clear victors in 13 separate categories. Now that everyone has funneled through the Joan River’s Red Carpet and gotten to their seats, it’s time to announce the winners.

Best Horror Film

The nominees were:

Halloween 2
Drag Me To Hell
The Haunting in Connecticut
Paranormal Activity
Friday the 13th

And the winner was: Paranormal Activity. New, raw, scary and now, a box office hit. It is no surprise that Paranormal Activity ran away with the award, easily beating out Friday the 13th that came in second.

Best Science Fiction Film

The nominees were:

Star Trek
District 9
Watchmen
Terminator Salvation
Monsters vs. Aliens

And the winner was: District 9. Neill Blompkamp’s movie about aliens and their struggle for survival in a South African compound known as District 9 narrowly beat out Star Trek to take the award.

Scariest Film

The nominees were:

Halloween 2
Drag Me to Hell
The Unborn
Paranormal Activity
Haunting in Connecticut

And the winner was: Paranormal Activity. No surprise that the film that won Best Horror comes in and takes more hardware with its win for scariest film. Paranormal Activity was everything that is was built up to be and easily won the majority of the votes in this category.

Best Director

The nominees were:

Zach Snyder for Watchmen
Neill Blompkamp for District 9
Rob Zombie for Halloween 2
Henry Selick for Coraline
Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious Basterds

And the winner was: Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious Basterds. This race was the closest of any of the categories with Quentin just barely eking out a win from Neill Blompkamp. Don’t worry Neill, you are definitely on our radar and we expect that you will end up with a trophy case full of hardware by the time your career is over.

Best Movie Poster

The nominees were:

Drag Me to Hell
Jennifer’s Body
Friday the 13th
Halloween 2
The Unborn

And the winner was: Jennifer’s Body. Call it the Fox Factor, but Megan Fox looking all sexy in a schoolgirl setting easily won out over Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees inspired prints.

Best sequel or remake

The nominees were:

My Bloody Valentine
Star Trek
Halloween 2
The Last House on the Left
Terminator Salvation

And the winner was: Star Trek. Voting was not even close as Star Trek easily beat runner up, The Last House on the Left. Surprisingly, Halloween 2 which has received plenty of attention and commentary on the Killerreviews.com message board ranked dead last in the voting.

She’s So Damn Hot Award

The nominees were:

Danielle Harris - Halloween 2
Zoe Saldana – Star Trek
Sienna Miller – G.I. Joe
Odette Yustman – The Unborn
Megan Fox – Jennifer’s Body

And the winner was: Danielle Harris for Halloween 2. Danielle Harris was a guest on the Killerreviews.com Podcast Episode 19 and her charm must have rubbed off on our voters who picked the young Halloween star over the much hyped Megan Fox of Jennifer’s Body. So much for the Fox Factor.

Best Television Series 2009

The nominees were:

Dexter
Heroes
Smallville
Supernatural
True Blood

And the winner was: Dexter. By almost a 3 to 1 vote over runner up Supernatural, Dexter takes home the trophy.

Best Death Scene 2009

The nominees were:

Hand in Disposal – The Last House on the Left
Arrow to the Head – Friday the 13th
Nascar Death – The Final Destination
Nigerian Drug Lord Kill – District 9
Naked Chick – My Bloody Valentine

And the winner was: Nascar Death – The Final Destination. No category provided as much discussion as Best Death Scene. There were the Nascar Death supporters and the Naked Chick supporters each unwilling to budge. Upon review we found that few people saw both films so the winner may have been a result of the most watched. In the end, Nascar Death won by a nose. Now, if only we can get a horror film to put a naked girl being killed in a racecar and we have a hands down winner.

Best Creature or Monster

The nominees were:

Prawns – District 9
Dragon Creature – Outlander
T-800 – Terminator Salvation
Snow Creature – Star Trek
Twisted Creature – The Unborn

And the winner was: Prawns – District 9. District 9 won its second trophy as the aliens in a race struggle with the humans won for best creature or monster.

Best Video Game of 2009

The nominees were:

F.E.A.R. 2 : Project Origin
Resident Even 5
Batman Arkham Asylum
Ghostbusters
Wolfenstein

And the winner was: Batman Arkham Asylum. A clear and decisive victory, Batman Arkham Asylum easily won for game of the year.

Best Ass Kicking Female

The nominees were:

Megan Fox – Tranformers 2 / Jennifer’s Body
Malin Akerman – Watchmen
Alison Lohman – Drag Me To Hell
Isabelle Fuhrman – Orphan
Beyonce – Obsessed

And the winner was: Malin Akerman for Watchmen. As alter ego, Silk Spectre II, Akerman kicked serious booty in Watchmen. The movie might have been unnecessarily long, but seeing Akerman kick some bad guy ass made us thankful her scenes didn’t hit the cutting room floor.

Best DVD/Blu-ray Release

The nominees were:

Watchmen
Trick ‘R Treat
American Werewolf in London
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
The Wizard of Oz

And the winner was: Watchmen. Yet another close vote between Zach Snyder’s Watchmen and An American Werewolf in London. But when all the votes were counted, Watchmen edged out the 1981 classic.
