I would have to say for me it was "Cloverfield". It's like Godzilla for today's generation. I can't wait for the sequel.

Definitely NOT the new Friday the 13th movie. Cloverfield was pretty awesome. The first time I saw it, the screen was too dark and I couldn't make out what was going on...also the guy shooting the video annoyed the hell out of me. The second time I saw, I really enjoyed it.

Gutterballs by far, it was way out there!

Yeah, I saw Gutterballs a while back and it was pretty hard core. Do you know if anything was removed when it was released on DVD? I'd love to own the unedited/unrated version on DVD if it's available.

If anything was removed from the DVD version of Gutterballs I saw, it must of been a snuff film. I got it from Netflix and it had everything and then some. Graphic as hell.

So far this year, I LOVED "The Cremator" and I really dig "Repo! The Genetic Opera"...
I also re-watched "Battle Royale" and it stands as one of the greatest films ever...
Beyond that, not sure... liked "Crowley", but I hear most people don't. "Cold Prey" was decent.

I just watched Freddy vs Jason once again. This past week I rented Jack Brooks Monster Slayer, that seemed to be more of a bizarre comedy then a horror flick though. I guess I'd probably have to say Stephen King's the Nightflier.

Inside (unrated) and Imprint (not rated).
These 2 Films were well done and will give a viewer, a real visceral reaction.

Honestly I know you must be, or I hope you’re joking. Cloverfield was a whacked, over hyped fiasco that barely showed its main Monster.
P.T. Barnum said there’s a sucker born every minute I hope you’re not one.
Don’t be duped by a sequel and more hype.

Repo was a Dupe just by its box cover. He’s in RED on the Box and BLACK in the movie.
Sarah was the only real “Singer” even though Paul is supposed to sing opera in real life, and Paris need I say more.
Actually the concept could have been a great gore effects bonanza but the opportunity was squandered. That’s why they promoted the association to the producers of “SAW” so Blatantly.
They new it was a dud!

The Descent was the last good horror movie for me. Most are lame remakes (Is Rob Zombie just cashing in doing Halloween remakes?) Just because it is easier to make movies now with video cameras doesn't mean most of these low-budget horror movies should be made. Bad acting and effects can be overlooked if there is a good plot. Most of these movies don't even try...

I heard from somewhere (can't remember where) that Rob Zombie did Halloween 2 in order to get another film he wants to make green-lit. I wish I could remember the film. Conan maybe?
We used to get shitty low budget horror movies in ever week for review. I eventually stopped taking them. Our head staff writer Gavin Schmitt reviews them all. I honestly don't know how he does it.
PS - drabo, I liked Cloverfield and can't wait for the sequel.

Yeah who knows what's going on rob Zombie he says one thing and then does another thing and then next week he does a completely different thing.

I just rented 'End of the Line' which was released right to DVD and it definitely surprised me... Super low budget, but done really well. As for a theater, just got back from 'Drag Me to Hell' and I must say that it is without a doubt the best horror film put out in the last year. Going into a 'PG-13' flick was a put-off for me to start, but it is everything that was great about the old 'Evil Dead' series, with a mood and feel that really delivers a punch.

The horror flick I enjoyed most recently was Midnight Movie, I'm not sure what the general opinion is, but I found it fun, with decent gore, a cool slasher & a new twist on the old "rubber reality" theme. Only $10 at waly world too.

I would have to say that the last good horror movie I saw was Diary of the Dead. I liked how it presented a different perspective on a zombie apocalypse, yet still following a group of survivors.

1) I didn't know that Cloverfield counted as horror.
2) I just watched Thir13en Ghosts a few days ago. I don't get to see horror movies with tolerable acting in them very often so this is probably the best I've seen in a while.

Good point by Motion Picture Meltdown about Thi13een Ghosts though. Not the greatest ever made but definitely underrated.

I'm with you on that one! It wasn't a perfect movie, but I loved the old-school Twilight Zone vibe... it really felt like the TZ episode "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street." I think a lot of people turned against the movie because the ending was so incredibly grim (and ironic). I thought the ending was a bold move by Darabont and the writers.
My own pick for the last really good horror flick I've seen is Drag Me to Hell. It's probably one of Raimi's weaker horror movies, but even a lesser Raimi is better than the endless stream of uninspired remakes being churned out by Hollywood these days. Gore hounds may be disappointed (it's rated PG-13), but it's an effective old-style horror movie that feels like a story torn from the pages of a 1950s Tales from the Crypt comic.

I'd also like to point out that on the BD of Cloverfield has the enhanced viewing mode that really takes the flick to a deeper level. This feature really made the movie for me & I think it's really unfortunate that the DVD didn't include this cause I think many missed out.

I just watched Dead Birds and was surprised that The Butcher didn't enjoy it more. A western/horror with a few good scares I thought was a good mix and with Martyrs, Inside, Outpost and now Dead birds, I think there are some hidden gems out there to find on dvd.

No question - Martyrs. I was literally squirming in my seat for the second half of it. And it wasn't a Hostel-type horror porn either. Serious, deep stuff that kept me awake for more than a couple of nights.

The last time I saw it, it was a cam and you can hear the camera man fart in the middle of the quiet theater then giggle about it like a little girl. How are the extended kills btw?
Homicide
07-16-2009, 01:06 PM
Pretty much all the kills on the extended cut are more graphic, most last a little longer, but with all of 'em you get a much better sense of Jason's brutality. The best though were Chewie's death in the shed, it lasts longer & comes off just really vicious and of course Trent's death, which lasts much longer, and words can't do it justice, if you have a good sound system you can hear his sternum breaking, it's beautiful.

Yeah, Chewy's scene was much better. I said this in my review and I stand by it though...with that much pot growing around Crystal Lake, you'd think Jason would be more mellow!

Sounds great, they finally added the extra brutality I was craving after watching it. Oh, and I think this movie was all about Jason protecting his stash. "Whoa son, you just came about this close to hitting the 'Go' button on the whoop-ass machine." Classic, I'll be using that one in the future.

Just an added bit, in the behind the scenes stuff on the Blu-Ray they show an alternate death scene for the dirty redneck, which also involves Jason getting his mask in a different manner, actually much preferred this version, dunno why they didn't go with it?

Just watched the My Bloody Valentine remake, and *gasp* I actually enjoyed it..
I got a copy on BD and was intrigued more than anything I guess, but I too actually was thoroughly entertained the entire movie. Also love anything with Tom Atkins so that helped.
Fast paced, great nudity, great kills, solid ending, not on par with the original by any means, but a billion times more entertaining than the new Friday film in my opinion, which was pretty damn weak and too predictable, but worth a view at least.
By predictable I do not mean in the way every slasher is farely predictable, I mean the route they took with the story and way it played out, there was zero emotional attachment to a single character, even when one you think will survive gets it, i felt nothing for them. Great kills early on but wish they would have brought back Jason in the Fridays 2-4 mold, of being slightly more human and not a fucking super beast with no soul.
Too bad no one ever knew Jason was the next great Archer of his generation, maybe they wouldn't have picked on him so much

My favorite of recent years I would have to say was The Signal, I do live in Atlanta and it was an entire Atlanta Indie film so I may be biased but i really really dug the concept and the brutality mixed with the dark humor.

Finally got around to watching Martyrs, watched it with my girl who was very intereseted because she can speak French.... that being said, not a date movie. I have so many mixed feelings about this one, really made me uncomfortible, and I am not sure if it was mainly because i knew how uncomfortible she was watching the last half, or because it is quite the squirmer through the last half hour. We both agreed the "first movie" in the movie was great, intense, fast paced, creepy as hell, fairly straight forward, what i expected. Then the "second movie" within the movie, really just the second half of the movie although it feels like two distinct different films, is so unnerving I felt almost guilty saying I enjoyed a moment of it. As a few days have passed i have found more and more I enjoyed about the film and would recommend it to anyone who would like to see a Horror film push the envelope in ways I did not know could still be pushed. I liked the ending and I have had it on my mind for three days now, so I think it did its job. Probably one of the most visceral and disturbing movies i have ever watched all the way through, and If you think you have grown numb to violence or horror, give this one a view.

I wouldnt say go into it thinking this is going to be a great movie, for me it was effective more than it was good. And i have appreciated it more and more thinking back on it than I actually did watching it. Although there is some bad ass stuff that goes down through the first hour, its pretty unrelenting and entertaining, the rest of the film will hit you like a ton of bricks. But like i have heard it is better going in knowing less, the most accurate review i read without giving away spoilers is that if you show someone the first 15 min and the last 15 min there is no possible way they can tell its the same movie. semi-spoiler (and it's not an "it was all a dream" ending haha)
