I’m sure an HDTV is on many of our readers’ holiday wish lists (I know it’s on mine), but if you’re planning on buying one for yourself or for someone else, do not buy HDMI cables in store. When it comes to their major electronics, stores make most of their money not from the big-ticket item but from the accessories they’ll encourage you to buy along with it. That’s why when you go from store to store, you’ll see HDMI cables as high as $150 for a 10-foot cable. That’s fine except you can go right here and get a 10-foot HDMI cable for $11.90 with $5.95 USPS priority shipping. Don’t let your “too-good-to-be-true” radar go off. One cable isn’t $140 better than the other. They’re the same and they do the same job. Talk to any tech-savvy person you know (and savvy in that they actually understand technology, not that they own a lot of expensive tech) and they will straight up laugh in your face if you tell them you bought a 10-foot HDMI cable for 150 bucks. It will be really embarrassing.

The best retail establishment I found for cables and whatnot is Radio Shack, typically $10 or so. Never, ever buy cables at Best Buy, these are the $150 ones that GregMO mentions.

On that note, if you do plan on getting an HDTV I can't recommend the correct cables enough, you will see a difference. Whenever I hear anyone complain about HD and claiming to not notice any difference what-so-ever I always ask if it's hooked up correctly and I usually get the answer "I don't know."

I found this place while I was in Iraq. The prices are amazing. Here is the link for Home theater cables. http://www.wiredco.com/home-theater-c-102.html

Thanks for the heads up, I'm getting a BR player for Christmas, any recommendation on the cable style?

Heads up though. Not all HDMI wires are the same. For instance, I paid 50 bucks for mine at Best Buy and the picture looks amazing. I got a free HDMI wire from comcast (that I used for my second Blu-ray player) and the picture looks like total shit.

I'm sure you don't want to buy them at Best Buy but for the love of God don't pay $10 for one. If I were you I would pay $50 for a five to seven foot cable. Those usually come with a lifetime warranty too.

The one's I bought off that site are great. I have them hooked up to my ps3 and use 1080p which makes BR look great on my tv. As long as you get the gold tips you should be in the clear.

Butcher, which brand is your wire? I just want someone to vouch for one and I'll pick it up.
