I know black socks don't have anything to do with the Movies About Girls podcast, but I'm still very curious to hear what YOU have to say about black socks.

I purchased a bag of black socks out of curiosity since they weren't my usual choice of socks. I wanted to walk on the wild side and fly my freak flag high. I wanted to do these things wearing black socks.

Today when I removed my shoes and shortly thereafter, my socks, I noticed that there was black fuzz on my feet. I disliked this event. Thankfully, I never wear the same pair of socks twice due to my extreme devotion to Superman 2 (or was it 3? whichever one had Richard Pryor in it was the one I'm talking about) and when this bag of black socks is gone, I'll never have to think of them again.

So now I ask YOU this question.

"How do you feel about black socks?"

I like black socks. After you wash them a couple of times, the fuzz goes away. But obviously you won't get to that stage.

White socks can look really goofy, especially when people are sat down and their ankles show.

I wear striped socks, toe socks, or preferably no socks.

I tried to go exclusively with black socks last year, but they looked stupid at the gym. So I abandoned the project.

Black Socks is not good feng shui. Polka Dotted or Two stripes at the top are only acceptable socks.

I wear black socks exclusively. The shortest ones I can find. I hate socks. And Gore Gore Girl is right about the fuzz going away. Bare feet are best, though.

I think I have a solution:

Down with sock racism!

Here's the bottom line, Jim: only children and the unemployed wear white socks. And people who wear Birkenstocks and hit greasers with their Volvos.

Gray athletic socks are a good compromise, or mulatto if you prefer, but the only place I've ever seen them is Wal-Mart and I've made a pact with the Lord to never enter a Wal-Mart again under my own volition.

It's unfortunate that socks seem to be a necessity in colder climes. However, I posit that the real problem is feet. Feet are a menace and anyone with at least one of them is not to be trusted.

I wear two pair, white socks under black socks. No problems with black fuzz. Feet consistently toasty. Thus, I am satisfied with the current sock situation. Like Jim, however, I am also interested in new experiences, and so will continue to watch this thread.

I think I might try those old timey socks with the calf suspenders.

I am so very happy to hear about what everyone thinks about black socks and socks in general.

This smiley represents my inner feelings :).

Seeing as how I wear Chuck Taylors alot, I find that white ankle cut socks work the best for me. Unless it's the wintertime, then I find the thick, wooly white knee high socks with the gray dye on the toes and near the heel quite comfy.

Most of the time around my house in the summer, I tend to go with no socks and cheap deck shoes, because it's my house, and I don't have to be governed by the moral majority's prudish need for me to wear under garments on my feets .

My situation has changed. I still wear toe socks in the evenings, but now that summer has arrived and I am working my manual labor job in the blistering sun, white socks with the lowest-cut ankle level possible have become my friend, so as to avoid that awful ankle-tan-line.

P.S. What are "Chuck Taylors"?

P.S. What are "Chuck Taylors"?

Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star canvas tennis shoes. A staple of Americana...and endorsed by Ramones fans everywhere. I own probably 10 or twleve pairs of 'em in varying colors.

We should forgive her. She is a visitor to our shores, and a stranger to our heathen ways.

In addition, I know of these shoes, but never heard of them referred to as "Chuck Taylors." I think I've only heard of them referred to as Cons, or "baseball boots." For real.

As for the reasoning behind referring to them as "Chuck Taylors", here it is:

http://media.collegepublisher.com/media/paper694/stills/r1ia9bh6.jpg

From Wikipedia:
Chuck Taylor All-Stars, or Converse All-Stars, also referred to as "Chucks" or "Cons" are canvas and rubber shoes produced by Converse. They were first produced in 1917 as the "All-Star," Converse's attempt to capture the basketball shoe market.

The shoes were not particularly popular until basketball player Chuck Taylor adopted them as his preferred shoe. He was impressed with the design so he became the shoe's leading salesman.

After proposing a few changes to the shoe, the shoe got its current name and Chuck Taylor's signature on its ankle All Stars patch. One change was the switch to nonslip soles. Although classic black is the most popular, Chuck Taylor was himself known to prefer unbleached white high-tops (known in his day as simply "white").

In the 1950s the shoes became popular within the greaser subculture and amongst many fans of rockabilly.

Sweet - thanks for the background. I wonder why I have heard them associated with baseball. Probably some kind of British ignorance over sports beginning with "B."

Black socks look better in the shade. And yes, they are all I wear unless I'm running.
