Mar 01, 2010 Even though Marvel seemed intent to destroy all of the interesting things about Peter Parker/Spider-Man with their ridiculous retconning some years back, it seems writer Mark Waid is intent on throwing new obstacles at ol' Webhead. With old villains returning, what more could possibly go wrong for our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man?

Well, unemployment, of course.

Marvel Senior Editor Steve Wacker said “Peter Parker’s been through some rough times lately, with all of his deadliest foes returning, and he couldn’t lose his job at a worse time. He’s going to struggle with unemployment and trying to save the city while he can barely afford to keep a roof over his head.”

When a risky move to protect New York and Mayor J. Jonah Jameson causes him to sacrifice his career as a photographer (a 60+ year career, no less), we'll get to see Spidey deal with some real life problems while struggling to maintain his superheroics: just like the old days. After all, you need money for repairs, and when you aren't bankrolled by a billionaire, the vigilante thing could be hard to pull off.

I'm interested to see if Waid and company is able to keep this story relevant. It's an interesting an idea to see a superhero on unemployment, and I think in the times that we live in, has the potential to be one of the best Spider-Man tales in a long time.

The story begins in Amazing Spider-Man #623, which goes on sale Wednesday, March 3.
