I'm so excited. I don't believe I've seen "Escape from New York" and I've had a real itch to fix that for about two years now. I had read that the current DVD's suck so I've been desperately waiting for a blu-ray. It was a real tease when Escape from LA was released a few months ago. I saw Escape from LA in the theater and thought it sucked. That was a long time ago so I probably should give it another try.
This release looks like it has problems. It appears it might come in a DVD jewel case and IMO the cover art is not as good as the original. But hey, none of that effects how the film looks on my system.

This is a classic, one of my fave movies ever but the Blu-Ray release over here got pretty average comments for picture quality. Hopefully the US release will be a better source.
There's a thread over at Av that might be useful. http://www.avforums.com/forums/blu-ray-movies-tv-programmes/802116-escape-new-york-blu-ray.html

I don't think I've ever seen this movie from beginning to end. Looking forward to this very much.

I haven't seen it either but Psycho is going to buy it so that will be remedied soon enough.

Great movie, I will purchase this for sure. I own the bare-bones release, never got the SE version of it. Hopefully, that is this one, with the 'Bank Robbery' scene or whatever it was.

According to blu-ray.com (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Escape-from-New-York-Blu-ray/12117/#Review):
"This 1080p/AVC-encoded transfer, framed closely to the film's original 2.39:1 aspect ratio and placed on a dual-layer 50 GB disc, is easily the best Escape From New York has ever looked on home video. "
"While I can imagine the film looking sharper and more defined than it does here, my gut tells me that given the nature of the film—it's budget and shooting conditions—this is probably the best version of the film we're ever going to see. "

I picked it up on Tuesday, haven't watched yet, but being that it's one of my all-time favortie films it was a no-brainer of a puchase for me!

The Escape from New York Blu case came in the worst shape I've ever received a new disc in. The plastic is wrinkled to hell and they put some stupid looking Cult Classics insert over the front with adhesive that melted a spot the size of a nickel on the front. I am thinking about tracking down someone at MGM to send me a new case. Anyone else have this problem?

Mine also came with the stupid Cult Classics thing glued to the front, but it's not in that bad of shape otherwise. The store I buy most of my movies at will hook me up with a new Blu-Ray case is I want, they always have spares.
