I'm curious to know what criteria everyone has when upgrading their DVD to Blu-ray. Do you guys update all your favorite movies? Do you only buy newer movies on Blu-ray? Do you buy older movies based on new features or image quality?

I first buy movies that I don't have on Blu-Ray or if I get a great deal on an Ebay lot, then I don't so much care if I already have the movies on DVD. I will never be able to make a complete transition, it would simply cost too damn much.

In general, I've been very picky as to which titles make it into my home library. As a result, I don't have a huge DVD collection, but I've been very careful to wait for an edition of a movie that I'll be satisfied with. The strategy has worked well, as I've only had to upgrade a couple very early versions of DVDs to the much more extensive editions issued later (notably Alien, Aliens, and Dawn of the Dead).

So far I don't have any Blu Ray titles which I already had in DVD (granted, my Blu Ray collection is in the infant stage, but I also don't have any plans for Blu Rays to replace any existing DVDs). For instance, I passed on earlier DVD editions of The Wizard of Oz, but will definitely take the plunge with this latest Blu Ray package.

Another example is the original Star Wars trilogy. We know Lucas has been milking the reissues of these movies since the days of Betamax, so I did not jump on the bandwagon and purchase them when they were finally released on DVD. I saw the material listed, and I just know that this edition was not the true "loaded" edition I know Lucasfilm is capable of putting together, so I passed on making the purchase and will wait until Lucas assembles the definitive version we all know will come out at some point. In the meantime, Spike TV runs the Star Wars movies frequently, so I can always get my fix while flipping channels on holiday weekends.

I personally buy both DVDs and BRs, I've upgraded a few films from DVD to BR, but not too many. One of the main factors that comes into play for me in special features, I'm a junky for my special features & if there's any really good shit attached to a new re-release, that will usually push me one way or another. On that note, the recent trend, which DVDs get the shaft on special features & BR are loaded I feel is bullshit, but it's working because I have been buying films on BR based on this fact in many cases.

Many of my Blu-ray purchases have been for movies I really loved but never bought on DVD or the DVD I own has poor image quality. I’m never concerned with getting comedies, dramas or chick flicks on blu-ray. The movies I typically look to upgrade are popcorn Action flicks like the Transporter, Die Hard, Terminator, Predator and James Bond franchises. There are some movies that I always upgrade even if it’s just for better special features. I was showing a lot of restraint until Best Buy and Amazon started having ridiculous sales starting 6 months ago.
