So, last Friday I sat down, looking through the free movies section on Comcast, cause' I'm cheap. Browsing through the horror category, I immedietely set eyes on a new release, title Klown Kamp Massacre. With a name like that, surely this is a landmark movie.
(SPOILER ALERT) The totally original plot goes like this: 15 years ago, a guy named edwin went to Bonzo Ranch Klown Kamp. Edwin sucked as a clown, and nobody laughed at his jokes. On graduation day, he went on a killing spree, slaughtering all of his fellow students.
Nowadays, the camp has reopened, and a new klass of klowns has come to Bonzo Ranch. Unfortunately, Edwin is back, and he is killing them off, one-by-one...
So, lets be klear (groan) on one thing here: This is Friday the 13th with klown makeup slapped on. The film starts off with flashback kills, then, the first camper killed is a hitchhiker, getting picked by a driver whose face we don't see.
Now, any terror this film has is in the first five minute, which set up my expectations disappointingly high for the rest of the movie. It starts with a clown filming another clown on graduation day. Through the fuzzy lense, we see a third clown step up and slit the filmed klown's throat. It then cuts to Edwin himself carrying the camera, walking along the campus, narrating and showing all the rooms and bodies to his mother in a wavering voice. he walking into his room, and we get a brutal scene of Edwin scalping a klown eating cheerios.
It's all very creepy, which is off set by the next hour of the movie.
The very idea of this klown kamp is ludicris, with a clown army drill sargent teaching all the new recruits, which include an emo klown, a magician clown, a nerd clown, etc. There is even a pedophile german! There is a lot of humor in Klown Kamp Massacre, and they make fun of the slasher genre fairly often.
The cinematography in this film is awful, like original Texas Chainsaw awful. They even use cartoons at one point, and break the fourth wall a couple of times. The angles are weird, but it is tolerable.
The kills are OK for the most part, with 2 stranglings, a couple hachets, acid seltzer, hit-and-runs, and dynamite in pies. Yes, they go there.
What may make up for the countless shortcomings is the twist ending, which is right up there with April Fools Day. I didn't see it coming and it is a genuine surprise.
Overall, this would be a great movie to watch stoned, but if there is nothing else on, This could be an entertainng flick to catch. It's available for free on Comcast free movies as I right this, so go check it out.
Rating: 5/10 There are a ton better slasher films out there, but how many klown slashers are there?
