those of us in the mass effect circle know that the ending to the series 3rd and final game recieved quite a bit of criticism due to its "artistic", "open ended" finale. Earlier this year Bioware announced that they would be releasing an extended cut in response to the fans outcry at the lackluster ending. The fact that Bioware, in essence, caved to the demands of fans has also been criticized by game journalists, calling gamers entitled babies among other choice adjectives. If you havent involved yourself in this controversy i would suggest hitting up google or youtube for Mass Effect 3 Ending for the crazy that went down.

Regardless of what people have said, this is happening. i for one fought with myself to like the ending and try to interpret it in a way that i thought would be fitting, but when seeing one of my dead crew members walk out of a ship that they shouldnt be on, amongst many many other hicups in the story, i lost it. after hours of scouring the internet for some kind of resolution as to what i just witnessed and i eventually came across what has become known as the "indoctrination theory", if you are unfamiliar i dont have the time to explain but there are many links around the web. This was a well crafted and thought out fan theory, but as good as it was there were still to many plot holes lingering in the story.

to date, i have not been able to replay the game. If you played the series it is one of the most groundbreaking gaming series ever to be released and i have played the first 2 a dozen times each, just to experience as many of the possible outcomes as i could, but due the piss poor ending of 3 i cant get myself to start the game over. which is not to say it was a bad game, it was fucking amazing with real emotional weight to the story that i found myself almost in tears during several parts in the game. it is an emotional roller coaster that every one should experience from the first entry to the last, but unfortunately the last 20 minutes of the 3rd game are just plain shit.

the fact that bioware has taken the time to listen to fans and extend upon and actually explain in greater depth as to what the hell happened is a positive thing and i think that gamers should be glad that their voices can and will let these companies know that they cant fuck with us. at the same time though it is still upsetting to know that a series that i, like so many other millions of people, spent hundreds of hours on just to have the nonsensical ending that we got and ultimately had to get the developer to go back into the studio to extend upon. i wont try to hide my excitement though, i can not wait to get back into this game. it is a series that i got into on a hunch, which turned out to be one of the best decisions i have made in my gaming history.
