As a teenager growing up in the 1980’s, science fiction movies were looked upon with eyes of wonder and amazement. Adrenaline rushes made the hairs on my arm stand up as my eyes absorbed the marvels I was witnessing on the big screen. Aliens and science combined together in crowd pleasing event movies such as Predator (1987), The Terminator (1984) and Blade Runner (1981). But one can make a constructive argument that we have not had a successful mix in our films with such gratifying results since the Decade of Decadence.

Mr. Steven Spielberg had a lot to do with my excited emotional state. Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., Gremlins, Jurassic Park… Steven had a large influence on how I now judge and evaluate my science fiction entertainment value today.

Maybe that is why I got so excited with the initial trailer for the new film, Super 8. The film looked and sounded exactly like the 1980’s-type sci-fi’s that had me running to the theatre in a repetitive circle. So it was no surprise to see Steven Spielberg’s name attached to the project as a producer. It didn’t hurt to have J.J. Abram’s name accompanying the teaser either. Sure, J.J. has exactly two (yes, only 2) feature film directorial efforts on his resume. But Mission Impossible III and the Star Trek reboot were of such high entertainment value that his short and sweet history on the big screen was overlooked for the more optimistic jubilation of an Abram’s/Spielberg pairing.
