Now I would never consider myself true hardcore comic book enthusiast, but I have read many stories from the 80’s and 90’s while catching some trade paperbacks recently. I have found some of these comic book movies quite enjoyable with an air of annoyance. I can understand and rather enjoy some of the changes made from comic to screen, I also find many irritating and just betraying the true character many have come to love in the comics.
The most recent offender of my annoyance is The Amazing Spider-Man. Now I’m no Spider-Man expert, I have learned over the years of reading the comics, watching the TV show from the late 70’s, and the recent readings I’ve done of The New Avengers trade paperbacks, Spider-Man hides his true identity!! That’s why he wears a suit with a mask. To protect the ones he loves from his enemies that would be vengeful enough to hurt them. I don’t recall him ever revealing his face to his friends or fans, let alone anyone he’s trying to save in public.
The first Spider-Man movie was great and in my opinion, the closest to the comics any of the movies have attempted. Sam Raimi really brought Peter Parker and Spider-Man out of the comic and into real life, but gave Green Goblin the worst green costume ever. He ran around looking more like the Grinch and the screen over the mouth hole was horrible. Raimi did a great job with Doc Oc in his second part of the Spider-Man trilogy he directed. I believe he may have lost control of things with the studio in his third installment with Sandman and Venom. They both looked great but their stories were forced and did them no justice.
The Punisher has been another character that has been big enough to adapt to the big screen. Punisher doesn’t have the following Spider-Man does but he has enough notoriety to have 3 movies made about him. The first played by Dolph Lundgren in 1989, with I feel a close to the true character of Frank Castle from the comics. The second by Thomas Jane in 2004 in a great film but I feel changed the mythos of The Punisher way too much. I personally stayed away from the Thomas Jane movie until it was released on DVD. The final installment so far starred Ray Stevenson in 2008 with an over the top action and bloody as hell version called Punisher: War Zone.
Now don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy these movies. I just let my nerd rage get to me sometimes and needed an outlet to release my anger towards these movies at times. I’ve talked to some people about this and they see where the rage comes from and just let it go. Please feel free to let your nerd rage out on movies with me!

Nerd note: The 2004 Punisher was based on the books of Welcome back, Frank, written by Garth Ennis.
