    Default Independence Day 2 Update

To make Independence Day 2 or not to make Independence Day 2. That is the question facing filmmakers Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin. The two creators of the original have been struggling with the idea of a sequel almost since Independence Day blew away audiences and the box office in 1996.

Comingsoon.net got a chance to speak with Dean Devlin and he had this to say about a potential follow up:

"I hope so," says Devlin. "I can't say that it's going to happen, but I can say for the first time that for the first time in eleven years, Roland Emmerich are working together. There are a lot of moving pieces that are coming together. I don't know if it will come together, but we want it to happen. This is the first time since we made the originals that Roland and I are excited about doing it and feeling like we have the right idea and we have our fingers crossed."

"We felt enormous pressure," he tells us. "Over the years everyone has always asked us about it. We never wanted to do it unless it felt germane to the story. In fact, ten years ago I was hired to write a sequel to 'Independence Day' and they paid me a lot of money. After I finished the script, I gave the money back and I said, 'Don't even read the script. The script is okay, but we can't make an okay sequel to 'Independence Day.'' This is what gave me a career. The fans deserve better than this. And I really decided then that I was never going to do a sequel. Until about a year and a half ago when Roland called me up and said, 'Let's try again.' So we went out to Palm Springs and we cracked it. We said, 'That's a real sequel. That's a sequel that makes sense to do. That's a sequel that won't disappoint the fans. That one feels like we always intended to do that in the first place.' So I want it to happen. I don't know if it will."

This doesn’t mean that a sequel will happen. It just means that Devlin and Emmerich are thinking of jumping on the sequel/reboot train that has just about everyone else in Hollywood employed. Hopefully, there is more news to follow.

Not only would I want to see this, but I am pretty sure they have a solid concept by now. It's been since 1996 that the first movie was released, so I hope that a lot of care, and consideration in was taken in deciding a story to carry on this franchise. Like many of you, I LOVED Independence Day and would love to see a sequel, but it's got to be bigger than the first one. I've kept thinking about us bringing the war onto the alien planet. That would be something.

It would be interesting if the aliens who were beat in the first film have spent the last 20 years working on a defense system that would prevent their demise from the first and they come back again to win their 'Vietnam'
