Killer Reviews was in attendance Monday night as Eli Roth presented a screening of Cannibal Ferox at the Bell Lightbox Theatre in downtown Toronto. At the conclusion of the gala, Eli Roth and host Colin Geddes announced that Nicolás López’s Aftershock will have its World Premiere as part of the Midnight Madness program of the Toronto International Film Festival.

Aftershock stars Eli Roth, Lorenza Izzo, Andrea Osvárt, Ariel Levy, Nicolás Martínez and Natasha Yarovenko as six friends fighting to survive after a devastating earthquake in Chile. Eli Roth produces the screenplay by Nicolás López and Guillermo Amoedo based on the real events of the Chilean earthquake of 2010 that registered an 8.8 on the moment magnitude scale and is the 6th largest earthquake ever recorded. The earthquake triggered a tsunami which devastated several coastal towns and issued a tsunami warning in 53 surrounding countries.

Eli Roth gave us an account of his experience working with Nicolás López on the film: “It’s based on Nicolás López’s stories and what happened with the earthquake in Chile which was an 8.8. It went off at 3:30 in the morning. Most people were out partying in clubs but basically, the whole country shook like an amusement park for three and a half minutes. People crashed down people’s hands got cut off – everything fell apart. The prisons broke open. There was no police, no firemen. It was like fucking anarchy for six hours until daylight.”

Roth talks about how it was shot in Chile and how “everything was done practically because the country is still destroyed by the earthquake. But what’s great about Chile is that they don’t have the same safety laws that they do in America – so we got to do shit in Chile that I would never ever have gotten away with here. It looks fucking crazy and we went for it.”
