Between now and the closing film of the Toronto International Film Festival on September 16th, Killer Reviews will be highlighting some of the films that will have screenings at the prestigious event and giving you some insight into some of the more lesser known movies that being showcased in Canada.
Today, we take a look at JT Petty’s Hellbenders
Every year, the Toronto International Film Festival showcases 10 films as part of their Midnight Madness selection series which is the best in action, horror, shock and fantasy cinema.
One of the 10 entries picked for screening by programmer Colin Geddes this year is Hellbenders which will have its World Premiere.
Hellbenders takes us inside the Hellbound Saints of Brooklyn Parish. The Parish consists of a ragtag group of priests that live in a constant state of debauchery where smoking, drinking and philandering is widely accepted and the members try effortlessly to break each of the deadly sins in an almost quasi contest.
When a regular exorcism just won’t do the trick, the Hellbound Saints of Brooklyn are called in to trap a demon and drag it down to hell with them. To prepare, the members of the Parish must maintain a rigorous regimen of doing very, very bad things. A member (Andre Royo, who played Bubbles from The Wire) logs their misconducts to prove that they are ‘damnation-ready’. But when a tough case tests the team’s mettle and a new Church bureaucrat threatens to shut them down, they must sin and sin again in a mad race to save the world and halt a demon’s plans to wipe out humanity.
Hellbenders was shot in 3D and JT Petty (S&Man, Mimic 3), promises plenty of violence and profanity. Petty’s Hellbenders is ‘wickedly irreverent, thanks to brilliantly hilarious performances from the talented ensemble cast. Brown is adorned with the brightest halo of the bunch, taking demonic glee in this rare opportunity to be mercilessly comedic while spewing scotch socaked profanities that would make Linda Blair blush.”
The Hellbenders screening is sponsored by Cineplex and Space and will be screened on Tuesday September 11th at 7:00PM.
