Will there be two Independence Day sequels? Recent internet ramblings would suggest the answer to the question is ‘yes’.
The original Independence Day is now a decade and a half old, but talks of bringing the aliens back to earth for another invasion is a hot topic. In an interview with FilmStarts, Roland Emmerich (the man behind the original blockbuster) stated that the sequels will be shot together and be titled ID Forever – Part 1 and ID Forever – Part 2. He also hinted that the films would be converted into 3D.
Says Emmerich, "It's a tough battle between the studio and the actors. But you have a right idea, which was quite unique, and it is therefore worth it to keep trying."
Added co-writer Dean Devlin, "The thing that really hit me about the movie is how much love there is in it: between the characters; that the filmmakers had making it; that the cast had for each other. As we're approaching a sequel we're focusing on that aspect of it. Because I think that was really the key as to why it worked for everyone. It was lovable."
It’s hard to believe that a studio would leave such an opportunity to franchise the event film on the table. Independence Day has a huge following and still holds up after all these years. Still, bringing the series back could be more of a Phantom Menace than a Prometheus and considering the special effects involved, a budget of $200+ million would surely be required to bring the sequels to a pre-production status. Oh, and a script would help as well.
