Let me reiterate something that we are all too well aware – The Matrix 2 sucked. The original film starring Keanu Reeves as The Chosen One was a brilliant mind-bending action film that was one of the most influential science fiction movies of the past 20 years. But when the Wachowski family brought us parts 2 and 3 of the series, the stories got bogged down in their own excess and mythology. And leaving audiences on the hook after Matrix: Reloaded keeping them scratching their heads for months before Matrix: Revolutions debuted was just plain cruel.
This failure was not lost on filmmaker James Cameron who is hard at work on as may as three Avatar sequels (ok, two sequels and the potential of one prequel). When speaking to the LA Times this week, Cameron had this to say regarding the script’s progress, “It’s a little bit of a daunting writing task because it’s two scripts and they’ve both gotta be done at the same time. I’m writing it as separate stories that have an overall arc inclusive of the first film. I don’t want to suffer from the Matrix 2 problem, where it just ends, like, what the hell? It’s gotta end. There’s gotta be a sense of conclusion, but also a sense that the journey will continue, and that’s a fine line.”
Pre-production of Avatar 2 is set to begin sometime in early 2013 so you can give up the idea of saving a 2014 date on your holiday schedule as we are most probably looking at 2015 before we see any finished product.
And what can we expect? Who knows, but Cameron did have this to say, “It was this kludgy prototype the first time. We always knew as we were going along, this isn’t really working, but we’ll fix it for the sequel. The first film just about killed us, and now we’re gonna try to do twice that much.”
