So what do you guys think are some of the most overrated sci-fi and fantasy films?
I think they new Star Trek film was very over rated. It was good, but not great by any means.
Meat... Guts... all you can eat!!!!
Not sure if it counts as Sci Fi, but Lord of the Rings. One that definately counts as Sci Fi is the new Star wars.
I agree on the new Star Trek being overrated. It certainly deserves bonus points for rebooting a moribund franchise, and doing so by taking the extreme risk of recasting the iconic characters. One shudders to think of the many ways in which this could have been the Disaster of the Year. However, I don't think it ranks up there with the best sci-fi movies of all time.
V for Vendetta - Again, a good movie, but not great. The Wachowskis were obviously attempting to make a philosophical sci-fi movie (which it is) but sometimes it gets a bit too heavy-handed and talky.
Serenity - I'm a fan of Joss Whedon's works, and I certainly think Firefly had the potential to be a great TV series given time to prove itself. This movie, however, was not that moment of greatness. It's a fun space opera adventure, but it wasn't the Second Coming as some Browncoats would have you believe.
Return of the Jedi - I won't deny that it's a fun movie (the speeder bike chase is always worth the price of admission alone), but it has its share of flaws (even beyond the Ewoks). Seriously, RotJ only shows up on "Best Sci Fi" movie lists by coasting on the greatness of its predecessors.
I've got to agree with you on "V for Vendetta". I've tried to watch the movie several times and can never get into it. I want to like it so much too.
I can't agree with ya'll on V, it's one of my favs. I already gave my answer on another thread actually. For me it's BladeRunner, tried to watch it so many times to see what all the hype is but it fails to impress every time.
