I see about a quarter of the movies you see Greg, and I gotta hand it to you dedicated film critics - I think if I had to sit through nearly every new release I'd end up hanging myself from the theater balcony. It takes talent to write so many reviews and keep it fresh. I tip my hat to thee, sir!
Here's some of my own observations...
Movie that jumped the cyborg shark half way through: Terminator Salvation
Completely agree.
Worst film to gross $100 million: Taken
Was Taken that bad? I didn't see it, but a couple of my friends did, and they recommended it.
Least Laughs: Land of the Lost
Freakin' painful.
Worst sequel of the year: Pink Panther 2
I have a friend who swears the first movie (of the Steve Martin series) is funny as hell, but I still can't bring myself to watch it. I just cringe when I see Martin playing Clouseau. He reminds me of one of those guys who thinks he's doing a hilarious impression, but everybody else knows he sucks.
Most blatant rip off of NBC’s Heroes: Push
I couldn't help but think the same thing while watching it. To damn Push with faint praise, I'll say that it was still better than the last two seasons of Heroes (which I finally gave up on part way through last season).
Movie I wouldn’t have seen had I known it was so bad: Knowing
Ditto. Am I the only one getting sick of End-of-Times movies?
Most unnecessary remake: The Last House on the Left
Were any of this year's remakes necessary? Star Trek comes close, but that's more of a complete reboot than a remake.
Worst film title to be released during a world recession: Confessions of a Shopoholic
That movie was clearly filmed during a period of free-flowing consumer credit. On a related note, in The Taking of Pelham 123, the audience got a good chuckle out of the Dow Jones plummeting to 12,000. You'd think Tony Scott could have done a last-minute edit to get that a bit more in line with the reality of 2009.
Loudest film: Terminator Salvation
Nice to know it wasn't just my theater.
Best use of 3-D: Coraline
Coraline or Up, both were excellent in 3D.
Best Costume Design: Public Enemies, Watchmen
I would actually go with Harry Potter for costumes. After six movies, it's easy to take this series for granted, but the costumes and art direction have always been nothing short of Oscar quality.
Most tired franchise: Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
I'm going with the Ice Age franchise. Even 3D couldn't save it. Just keep Scrat around for animated shorts before other features.
Spookiest film: The Haunting in Connecticut
Haven't seen that one yet, so I have to go with Drag Me to Hell of the movies I've seen.
Spookiest Child: (tie) Ethan Cutkowsky (The Unborn), Zac Efron (17 Again)
Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan) will probably win this category before the year's end. Not to mention an appearance in the best cat-fight category too.
Movie that makes you wonder how they navigate through Rome so fast: Angels & Demons
Langdon borrowed Jack Bauer's Tom-Tom?
Best Film: The Hurt Locker
Runner Up: Star Trek
I haven't seen The Hurt Locker yet, though I've seen rave reviews and the previews look good. Of the ones I've seen, I'd go with Up as the top with Coraline and Harry Potter vying for the runner-up position.
Worst Film: Bruno
Runner up: Bruno!
Haven't seen Bruno yet either, so my worst pick is Fast & Furious with Knowing as the runner up. They were both excrutiating to sit through.
