Friends, this week (and the end of last week) I have been listening to nothing at work but Newsradio and CUMBIA CHICHA. It's lo-fi music of the people from South America - Peru and Argentina mostly, I gather. It's working music, if ever I heard it. Please check out the following free compilation, Chicha for the Jet Set. It's all ripped from vinyl by a DJ from Buenos Aires. Crazy good.

If that description didn't sell you on it, this song (which appears on the compilation as track 3) will.
Every time I listen to cumbia chica now I want to imitate the guy at the start of that song: CUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMBIA!!
I just saw this compilation of 'psychedelic cumbias from Peru' in a shop (Kim's Video) the other day...
Yeah, I've been listening to both volumes of that series. Really awesome stuff, but Chicha for the Jet Set is the compilation I keep going back to.
Went to a Tortoise show last night. Front row. Good stuff.
The opener Miracle Condition was really good too. Never underestimate the ability of an opening act to kick your ass.

Alistair (and everybody), you might also dig this comp of Persian Pop, Funk, Folk and Psych of the 60s and 70s called POMEGRANATES. Here's track 1:
One of the best bands in NYC now is THE 10¢ FUCK FLICKS (hey Cherry Bomb, that's a real band name). Imagine a raging punk rock version of THE SONICS / LITTLE RICHARD style rock and roll. Download a track from their brand new ep for free here:

And isn't that Christina Lindberg in the center?

What's the deal with Nashville Pussy? They came up on several MAG shows. Kent knows Karen Cuda, who isn't in the band anymore. Holly said Ruyter (the big-boobed, blonde guitar girl) was a bitch to her. But I like their first album a lot. I saw them play with Supersuckers, and Eddie Spaghetti filled in on bass. Good show. I met Blaine the singer afterwards and he seemed nice enough.
So, Nashville Pussy. Cool or not?
