I never got into this show. Could someone explain the appeal to me?

Sure.
It's cool to see Superman in high school and it's pretty brainless/fun entertainment. Most people will call the show a guilty pleasure, but oh well. I think it's a great show. It did get pretty bad around season five and six, but I think even bad Smallville is still good Smallville. When the show was good it was really good. The stories and plot progression were excellent. The cast is very charismatic too. AND the chicks are and were very hot.
But for me, the stories kept me watching. Once I started a season on DVD I could not stop watching. I own them all.
