When we got wind that Dario Argento’s 1977 horror classic Suspiria was getting the remake treatment, we immediately began thinking of the directors we would love to see behind the camera. Martin Scorsese, Eli Roth, Ti West…., we had no shortage of ideas and suggestions.
But the studio never came asking for our advice and yesterday, Deadline reported that Pineapple Express director David Gordon Green is getting the reins and will call the shots from behind the scenes.
The updated Suspiria is based on a script that Green helped pen with fellow writer Chris Begert and Crime Scene Pictures will help produce the film.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Argento classic, Suspira followed a young girl who travels to Europe to attend a renowned Ballet School. But soon, she realizes that the school consists of a coven of witches who are equally ruthless and destructive.
“We love the style and energy of the original film – and David’s script brilliantly updates the world, presenting a rare opportunity to create an elegant, classic horror film,” Crime Scene partners Ripp and Paris said in a statement.
Focus will now turn to casting and expect the studio to announce a release date as soon as production begins.
