Fans of director James Cameron who are anxiously awaiting the director’s follow-up to 2009’s Avatar (just the highest grossing film of all-time), should bunker down for an extended wait.
Cameron announced that over the next few years that he would be working exclusively on not one, but two Avatar sequels. And recent reports were that the Canadian born director has purchased 2,500 acres in New Zealand where he expects to live for half a year after he is done scripting the sequels.
But Cameron doesn’t seem to be rushing things towards production and The New York Times is suggesting that Avatar 2 will not find its way into our local theatres until 2015!
It’s hard to believe that we may have to wait six years for the follow-up. By the time Avatar 2 is ready, we will have been treated to three Thors, two Avengers and possibly even the three Hobbit films that are also in production in New Zealand at Peter Jackson’s Weta Digital production studio.
Whether audiences will still find the Avatar brand relevant in 2015 remains to be seen. And if anyone can get the anticipating juices flowing again it’s Cameron. He waited seven years between 1984’s The Terminator and 1991’2 Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Still, in today’s new pop-culture world of being ‘in’ one day and ‘out’ the other, will it be worth the wait?
