When we first got news a few months ago that Warner Bros. was looking at a script that would have Sylvester Stallone (you know, Rocky Balboa) and Robert De Niro (you know, the old guy from Little Fockers) as opposing aging boxers in a film titled Grudge Match, we prayed this was something the Farrelly brothers were pitching. We also prayed that the idea would die a painful, yet quick, death.
But again proving there is no god, Warner Bros. has officially given the greenlight to the project and director Peter Segal (Anger Management) has signed on the dotted line to call the shots behind the camera.
Script details are not readily available, but we do know that Stallone and De Niro will both play aging ex-boxers that are brought back to the ring to fight one last time.
Robert De Niro is now 69 years of age and Stallone is only three years his junior. Both can collect Social Security and the idea of these two men in a ring reminds me of when Joseph ‘Blue’ Palasky was about to have a wrestling match at Mitch-A-Palooza’s party in Old School.
My only hope is that the film is played for laughs. And considering Segal is directing (he also helmed the comedy Get Smart), I can keep my fingers crossed.
Still, I avert my eyes anytime a male over 65 takes off their shirts. Seeing two old men shirtless, sweaty and jabbing at each other is an idea I would love to see with the words ‘Development Hell’ beside it. |
