Producer Talks Lara Croft Reboot

Of all the video games that are rumoured or set to become movies – Silent Hill 2, BioShock, Halo – anything about rebooting or returning to the Lara Croft franchise does little to turn my interest crank.
The two previous entries – Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life (2003) – starred Angelina Jolie on the brink of stardom and had our hero embodying her video game persona on adventures once reserved only for Indiana Jones. But the films were equally silly and tacky and although both films made money, they were hardly considered box office hits.
Still, producer Graham King has been working with the Iron Man writers to bring the franchise back to life and he discussed his direction of the story with Comingsoon.net.
"Listen, the box office, they weren't disasters but I find it interesting that the story that we're telling is really the story before she became Lara Croft, so it is a character piece. It does have a lot of really great characters, but it's a lot of action and a lot of fun, and for me, it's something very different. I've not really done a movie like that before, but I really gravitated to rebooting this franchise and we're going to give it a shot."
Although King’s words don’t have me immediately summersaulting down the street naked, it is encouraging. X-Men: First Class went back in time to do an origin story and ended up being the best of the series. I guess it will all depend on the director and star of the new Lara Croft, both which are still to be determined.
