Let’s face facts. Having Brett Ratner attached to an already established franchise can be a very bad idea. In 2002, Ratner took over the Hannibal Lecter franchise and gave us a mediocre Red Dragon. Then in 2006, Ratner took over the X-Men franchise with X-Men: The Last Stand. The final film of the trilogy was easily the worst and all but ensured that the franchise be put to rest (that is until Matthew Vaughn took us back with 2010’s X-Men: Origins).
The ‘Rat’ is back at it again however with Midnight Run 2, a sequel to one of the best comedies of the 80’s starring Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin. The original Midnight Run was directed by Martin Brest and had bounty hunter DeNiro escorting fugitive Grodin across country with the F.B.I. in tow.
Released in 1988, Midnight Run was nominated for 2 Golden Globes (One, for Best Picture Comedy or Musical) and grossed a mildly respectable $80 million against a $30 million budget.
No news on whether any of the stars of the first film will reprise their roles including Joe Pantoliano, Dennis Farina and Yaphet Kotto, but you can all but be assured that DeNiro will be back as the man who could once do no wrong has become the man who cannot turn down a bad idea.
