Strange things are happening at Herrington high school. Casey (Elijah wood) suspects that the faculty at the school are being brainwashed by aliens. Casey is the school paper photographer. He and the paper’s writer, Delilah (Jordan Brewster) sneak into the teacher’s lounge snooping around to find a good story. While they’re there, the school’s coach and another teacher walk in and Casey and Delilah witness them infect the school’s nurse with an alien parasite. They fight their way out and while they’re running away they see the nurse and she looks fine. Casey and Delilah become friends with Zeke, a drug dealer Stokely or “Stokes”, Delilah’s on/off boyfriend Stan and a new girl Marybeth. They don’t believe the ‘alien story’ until they are attacked by one of the infected realize that the drug Zeke sells can kill an alien. They go teachers. In mid-fight they to Zeke’s house were they all take the drug which reveals that Delilah is an alien. They come up with a plan in which if they kill the Queen alien all of the aliens die. The 5 of them go to the school to kill the Queen who they think is the principal. They go to the school and kill the principal only to discover she is not the Queen. Shawn gets infected and the Queen turns out to be Marybeth. “Stokes” also gets infected. And Casey kills the Queen and everyone goes back to normal.
When I saw ‘The Faculty’ I knew it was written by David Wechter who also wrote Scream 1&2 (which is one of my favourite movies). I was going into the movie with high hopes. I was right. I really enjoyed this movie. It was really different as it was a combination of an alien invasion, horror movie and a high school comedy. I also think I liked it so much is because it is so much like Scream. Like in the scene in Zeke’s basement where no one trusts each other is just like the one in Scream when they think their friends are the killer. There is a twist at the end too when they think the Queen is the principal and when they kill her nothing happens as the real Queen is Marybeth. By the way, I think that was a cheat with her nostrils closing up when she sniffs the drug, but whatever. In The Faculty there is really no main character, which was good in my opinion because then you really don’t know which one of the kids are really kids and which may be aliens. This movie came out in 1998, which was 14 years ago so when Marybeth turns into the BIG alien I thought the effects would look terrible. Godzilla also came out that year and I wasn’t very impressed with those special effects so I didn’t know what to expect. The effects were actually pretty OK. The big alien kind ‘a looked real for a big bug looking alien. So if you haven’t realized by now I really enjoyed The Faculty I would give it an 8.5/10.
