(This review may contain SPOILERS)

In the little town of Snowfield, Colorado a phantom/ ghost/ devil/ demon is terrorizing the people that live there. Jennifer and younger sister Lisa are going there to get away from it all. When they get there, it seems that everyone is either dead or missing and no phones or cars are working ether. While they are hiding in a bakery they met sheriff Bryce Deputy “stu” and deputy Steve. They all hear noises coming from outside and Steve Goes to check it out and gets killed by something unknown. Then “stu” gets his face sucked of by a killer butterfly? (Yes I said killer butterfly.). On a mirror they see the name Timothy Flyte. They call in back up and they find and bring Flyte. Flyte is the Author of a book called “ancient evil”. Flyte believes that what ever is doing this is the ancient evil. The army comes with a team of medical examiners. They all get picked of one by one until the only ones left are Flyte, Jennifer, Lisa and Bryce. They come up with a way to kill this “demon” by using a parasite. They lure it out and shoot it with the parasite. Then “stu” comes back one more time as “possessed Stu” to try and kill them one more time he gets killed and they live happily ever after, but in the last scene you see “Stu” in a bar about to kill 2 more people.

Before I watched Phantoms I thought it was going to be really good because it had academy award winner Ben Affleck. I thought it was a movie about ghosts because it was called “phantoms”. Most ghost movies in the 21st century are good or scary, but then I remembered this movie didn’t come out in the 21st century. But if you read the plot summery you know its definitely NOT a movies about ghosts. Their were 3 major mistakes with this movie number one was the title. The title is “Phantoms” when you say “phantoms” I think Scooby-Doo. With a horror movie that is not a good thing. Mistake number 2 is the very beginning. At the beginning of Phantoms they wanted to “throw you in to the sorry” which is sometimes a good thing but in Phantoms they did it all wrong. It starts of in a car with the to main characters Jennifer and Lisa. What I think should have happened is you start of in the little town and watch everyone get killed. And last but NOT LEAST the 3rd major problem in Phantoms. The “villain” has way to may powers it can shape shift, summon killer butterflies and these black gooey veins. I thought their were way to many powers. So after all that Phantoms was really dumb but it was kind of fun to watch. Ben Affleck was the best part of this movie with all that said I give it a 5.5/10

The Rumor`s True: Ben Affleck Is The Bomb In This Film
Reviewed by Gavin Schmitt

Ben Affleck is a sheriff who comes to the aid of two young ladies (one played by the smoking hot Rose McGowan) who are alone in an abandoned Colorado town. He, along with another cop (Liev Schreiber) and an occult professor (Peter O'Toole), must take on the Ancient Enemy, a creature of evil incarnate from before the dawn of man.

Starting in the Kevin Smith film "Mallrats" and escalating to Smith's "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back", there has been the cult joke that "Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms". But the sad truth is that "Phantoms" might just be Affleck's best role up to that time... (though he has done some fine work since, particularly "Extract").

"Phantoms" is something of a transitional piece. On one hand, the film clearly gets some of its imagery from other films, most noticeably John Carpenter's "The Thing" (the creepy alien-like dog). But, also, "Phantoms" has lent its imagery to those who have come after it. There is evidence to support the theory that "Silent Hill" took some of its abandoned town scenes from Phantoms. The exact connection, if any, is unknown to me. I also see similar themes in "X-Files: Fight the Future", with the petroleum-based alien. And the influence this had on "Mothman Prophesies" is undeniable.

But in short, "Phantoms" is an interesting story with above average special effects for the time and enough gore to sustain the average horror of science fiction fan. The story might be a little lacking, but when you keep in mind it's a Dean Koontz story, it's not a big shock.

Fans of "The Thing" might like this, and any Affleck or McGowan fans should definitely check this one out. I own it, and I have no regrets for my purchase. If it hasn't become one already, someday this will be a cult film. My only concern? The DVD is a bit too bare bones.
